FARTING IS TO BE CRIMINALISED

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, widely known as COP26, has just finished. The talks were held in the Scottish city of Glasgow. Nearly every world leader attended its proceedings; notable exceptions were the Chinese, Russian and Turkish leaders, though there were Chinese, Russian and Turkish delegations at the conference.

The main aim of COP26 was to agree on measures to combat climate change and, in particular, to limit the increases of global temperature. In Paris, six years ago, COP21 agreed to limit global warming to within 1.5C of pre-industrial levels.

There is global warming because of the increasing emission of so-called greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, which trap heat in the atmosphere that would otherwise escape into space. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, consisting of leading climate scientists, reported that the effects of global warming in excess of 2.0C would be catastrophic and irreversible.

Several deals were struck in Glasgow. First, there was an agreement, signed by 137 countries covering over 90 per cent of all forests, to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Already, because of deforestation, the Amazon releases more carbon dioxide than it absorbs.

Second, there was an agreement over methane emissions. Over 100 countries pledged to cut their methane emissions. However, three of the five largest methane emitters, China, India and Russia, refused to sign this agreement. Methane is a very potent greenhouse; it warms the atmosphere 80 times faster than carbon dioxide. Farting will become an act of climate crime!

Third, there was an agreement to reduce the use of coal. But this agreement was watered down, after last-minute objections from China and India, from phasing out to phasing down the use of coal. India is almost totally dependent on coal to fuel its economy.

Fourth, there was a limited agreement to phase out fossil-fuel cars and vans signed by over 30 countries. But China, Germany and the US refused to sign this agreement. Germany exports a lot of cars!

Fifth, there was a renewed pledge that rich countries would provide so-called climate finance to poor countries in recognition that richer countries have most caused global warming and are best placed to manage its effects, and that poorer countries are most adversely affected by climate change and are least able to deal with its effects. It is one thing for the Dutch to manage the North Sea with its system of dykes to stop Amsterdam from mass flooding; and it is another thing for the Maldives, a group of low-lying islands, to stop disappearing into the Indian Ocean as sea levels rise. But this pledge has been made before and the monies never materialised.

Overall, COP26 is a mixed bag. The agreements to end deforestation and to cut methane emissions are very significant in combatting global warming. But its agreements on coal, cars and climate finance are far less significant; they are fudged deals which do little more than kick these issues into touch. But these climate change talks are part of an ongoing process; there is COP27 next year to be held in Egypt, where it will be at least much warmer than Scotland.

How worried are you about climate change?
Do you think governments are doing enough to combat climate change?
How green are you in everyday life?

I am very worried about climate change. I am quite green in the way I live. I use public transport, but I do eat meat. Climate change is by far the biggest issue facing the world today; it is an existential threat. Governments are doing something but I worry what they are doing may be too little, too late. I very much hope I am proved wrong.

For those who want to read more on climate change, there is a very informative website, Climate Action Tracker, which shows on a thermometer how the world is doing in controlling global warming. Also, for what it is worth, I did a post on COP21 six years ago - see GOOD COP, BAD COP.

Barack Obama turned up to the conference; he was given a rock-star reception. But there was no Greta Thunberg, the Swedish activist; she wasn’t invited but she did protest outside the conference venue. There was also no Donald Trump, but there would have been no meaningful conference if he was in power as he was pulling America out of these climate change talks.
PS. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that climate change deniers are often the same people who believe Donald Trump won the last presidential election, think Brexit is a good thing and argue covid vaccines are more deadly than covid itself?

This was a very important post about Global Climate Change. There are so many things that need to be done, and I hope all the Countries get on board and make changes to there global emissions.

How worried are you about climate change? Very worried, fires and storms get worse and more intense every year.

Do you think governments are doing enough to combat climate change? I know our Government is trying but the OLDER members of the Senate and House differ in their views of Global Climate Changes. They all need to come together to do what is right for the World.

How green are you in everyday life? I do all I can, we don't drive much anymore, we recycle and do all we can to protect the environment as best we can.

I hope you enjoy a Tantalizing Tuesday my friend..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

The biggest emissions at COP26 came from the mouths of the attendees.

I just hope these agreements all go ahead before it's too late. I'm more worried for the next generation regarding climate change.

Very concerned!
I have a gut feeling St. Peter has no clue who I am, and I'll be getting the 'fast pass' downstairs — where the climate is off the charts, f**king hot! 😮❗❗

Given the nature of the human animal, in the aggregate, I fear that the first cartoon is spot on. I would rather it wasn’t, but …

If we were attempting to apply the current level of “urgency” even a decade ago would likely still be too late, at least for a goal like 1.5C. Humans tend to be fairly good at skewing things towards the way we see the world, so some might believe (hope) we can still accomplish what parts of society want to (I flash to one Homer Simpson chasing a runaway, tumbling roast down a hill, exclaiming all the way, “it’s only a little dirty; it’s still OK!”).

As to the question in your obligatory first comment - yes, it absolutely is pure coincidence that people who would support/fan-boy/fawn over the Cheeto-frosted genius also believe these other patently-silly ideas (speaking of which, how is that Brexit thing goin’?). As Sheldon would probably say, “correlation does not prove causation.” Shut up, Cooper! And, when are we going to grow up … ?

Humans far outnumber meat animals. Why aren't they looking to reduce humans? Just curious. If they outlaw farts Cowboy is going to prison forever! LOL

I lump errands together to save fuel. Hang clothes on a line. I reuse anything I can then rehome or recycle everything that is done being useful. I also grow some of my own food.

I agree that we're screwed. I'm actually glad that I never managed to have any kids.

I would say I live a moderately green lifestyle. I don't drive much, and I have a hybrid car. I keep the thermostat turned down. Had an energy audit from our local utility company where they replaced all my light bulbs with LED's and recommended I beef up attic insulation, which I did. I recently saw a chart that showed beef has more than twice the carbon impact of any other meat, so I'm going to stop buying beef (I already was not buying much).

On the bad side, I live alone in a house that is bigger than what one person needs. I'm guessing at some point I'll downsize into an apartment or condo.

Nearly all countries are on board to tackle climate change. Climate change affects us all - floods, heatwaves, droughts, wild fires, etc. If someone told me when much younger that climate chnage would become a big issue nowadays, I'd think how did we get it so wrong. Humans could be the first species that witness their extinction.

But a conference of world leaders is the best and most realistic way of dealing with these things. No doubt hot air was emitted, but deals were struck and hopefully those deals will more-or-less stick. I can't think of any other way to deal with these issues. It's not as if Facebook or Google are going to tackle climate change!

Fair point. But I can't think of a better way to tackle climate change other than world leaders jetting to a conference to strike deals. It can't be done by Zoom or Microsoft Teams, sometimes you have to do it person to person.

Totally agree. But the tactic behind the COP26 deals is that those who want to strike the deal can go ahead (and will be much better prepared to deal with climate change and therefore benefit) and lead the way for those who didn't inititially strike the deal to come on board later (who will be less prepared to deal with climate change because of their inaction).
It's a risky tactic, but naming and shaming won't work with China, Russia and, oddly, Australia, the three contries that signed up to the least of all the COP26 deals.
I'm going on, so I'll stop!

Yes, I agree that COP26 is better than doing nothing and hoping that 'market forces' or some other wishful thinking will provide solutions.

Call me cynical, but no one wants to address the elephant in the room - the notion of perpetually increasing economic growth, which really means exponential resource consumption, which at some point has to become unsustainable.
Not sure what would replace that model and that is a problem

I suspect that at some point in the future that change will be imposed upon the world order, possibly because of the ramifications brought on by increasing climate variability, or even something like a stray asteroid or extreme solar activity damaging our electrified existence.
In reality it won't be any one factor, but more likely a combination of things that knocks our system into disarray. Rome didn't fall because of any one single event.
Look at the disruption we already have just from Covid-19.

I could go on but this is a cheesy, porny hookup site and not really the best venue for such weighty discussion . . . so . . let's get back to whinging about fakes and bots and tits and cocks and shitty IM and blog flooders and cam girls . . .

And if farting is ever criminalized, then there goes humankind's only universal source of humour which transcends time, culture and language.

You are right that correlation does not mean causation. But in this case there may be some causation as all three examples have a rejection of science, experts and evidence in common.

A lot of our recycled waste is shipped off to Asia to be burnt. The government boasts it is recycling when it's just exporting the problem. China, rightly, has just stopped taking our rubbish.

A lot of people say the problem is over-population. But the reality is a little more compliicated. The problem is that it is the richer countries where population levels are stable or are declining, rather than the poorest countries where population levels are increasing, which are far are releasing the most greenhouse countries. It's one complicated mess!
If I had a garden, I'd like to grow my own food. When I move to a house with a garden soon, I'll get growing

Like you, I think COP26 was better, and certainly more realistic, than previous COPs, even the then accaimed COP21 signed by all countries; that did not deliver what it promised as it relied on countries making plans without any means of enforcing them.
I know not all countries have signed up to every one of the COP26 deals but those that do will be more willing to deliver and be in a better place to deal with climate change.
Thanks for stopping by.
