Why I Moved to Alaska

Why I Moved to Alaska

In California, I worked in International Education at a university -mostly study abroad but some immigration work (under the Department of Homeland Security). When COVID-19 hit, it flattened our industry. It seemed like a good time to make a career jump... so after my office had recovered, I decided to move to Alaska and apply to a Ph D program at UAF (I already have a BS in Business Administration and a Masters Degree in Higher Education/Counseling & Guidance). I'm planning to start a doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies (a blend of Northern & Arctic studies, Early Childhood Education, and Indigenous Studies), Spring 2022. And, I'm working on getting a grant to pump into Alaska's preschool (and lower elementary school) system for Indigenous STEAM Curriculum. I'd love for to have domestic & industrial arts taught to them throughout all of Pk- (cooking, sewing, soap making, candle making, cheese making, wood shop, rv/go-cart making, paper arts (airplanes and other origami).

The same sign is good for here as well. We have an excellent economy and lifestyle but we are getting a lot of people who are moving away from California, Chicago and New York. We can only hope they will leave behind some of the politics that have killed those areas. I recently visited NYC and what use to be a thriving city is now a city that has a feel of uncertainty and lawlessness. There were no police to be found in the SoHo area and I witnessed several muggings in broad daylight. Will not be going back there any time soon. Good luck in Alaska.

Way to go. Welcome to the new adventure of Alaska. I had family that grew up there and near some of the smaller Russian villages. I hope that you find your area and have the ability to try some of the things you want to accomplish. It doesn't sound like you are wanting to change a society, but give them a jump start on some of the things that they may already do.

I hope you left your California politics in California.
Alaska wants nothing to do with the nonsense of
Gruesome Newsom and his band of idiots. They
are destroying what used to be the golden state.

Sounds like an ambitious move, good for you. Best of luck!!

Do whatever you want with your politics, I'm sure you're more level-headed than some of the prior commenters either way.
