Blonde In Yokohama Review

Released by Momotaro Video Publishing in 2013. Directed by Himrock. Runtime: 140 minutes.

The premise is somewhat unclear if you don't understand Japanese. The story is of Mia (played by Mia Malkova under the psyeudonym Mia Kaede Cameron) who travels to Japan to find her boyfriend who left her one year ago. Knowing his place of business, she starts there to track him down. She meets another man who presumably knows her boyfriend, and she decides to go with him. Before he will take her to meet her boyfriend, she must do some sexual favours for the man. With very little plot development, there is not much story. It should be noted that Mia is the only person speaking English. All other characters speak Japanese (without English subtitles). Story Grade: D.

This was presumably shot on digital video predominantly with a handheld camera. Medium Grade: B+.

There were a series of shots of Mia outdoors walking around Yokohama. It seemed that real locations may have been used for interior scenes, rather than using sets on a soundstage. The first sex scene was sparsely furnished. The second scene took place in a more liveable room with more furnishings. The final bedroom scenes looked like an actual bedroom. The ceiling could be seen in all the scenes. The kitchen epilogue scene was also sparsely filled with props. There was a row of Campbell's soup cans that didn't look realistic. Set Design Grade: C+.

The first sex scene was difficult to watch. Mia says no to the man, but he continues to force himself on her. Mia's character is clearly not into the guy, who isn't particularly attractive. The man likes to lick her, which just seemed gross, given her character's displeasure. While she played resistance, there was a moment when she seemed to hold back laughter. The scene was interminable. The man bound her wrists and suspended her from the ceiling and also bound one of her legs to a wall so that only one of her feet would touch the floor. The scene finally ended with a creampie. The second scene was shorter with Mia taking a more proactive role. The man was also more attractive. It, too, ended with a creampie. The man from the first sex scene returned for the third. Again, Mia tried to resist the man's advances as he had his way with her in her boyfriend's bedroom while he slept. It seemed as unrealistic as the first scene. The final sex scene is between Mia and her boyfriend. It is also long, but much more enjoyable than the first scene. Sex Performance Grade: C.

(Note: genitals are pixilated in Japanese porn, but they are still fairly well recognizable.)

Since Mia predominantly spoke English, it was bizarre for everyone else to only speak Japanese, yet her character seemed to understand what they were saying even though she spoke only a handful of Japanese words. The reading of the opening monologue was awkward, as was the majority of the acting. However, Mia Malkova exuded some sincerity. Acting Grade: C-.

Mia first appears in Japan wearing a rather short skirt, which is extremely rare for women to wear here. So that seemed unrealistic; however, traditional Japanese kimonos made an appearance and the other wardrobe choices seemed appropriate. Wardrobe/Make-up Grade: B+.

At times, there were sun-bleached exteriors. Sometimes there was too much light centered on close-ups. The third sex scene had the lights on, which, while practical for filming purposes, made no sense considering that the two characters engaged in sexual escapades are trying not to wake the boyfriend in the bed nearby. Lighting Grade: B.

English songs were incorporated at the beginning of the movie while Mia explores Yokohama. No music plays during sex scenes. The sounds of slobbering got annoying after a while in the first sex scene. Sound Grade: B-.

The movie is shot fairly well. Faces of the people walking the streets were blurred, which was a bit distracting. (However, that may be a requirement in Japanese adult videos nowadays.) While Mia's speech was accompanied by Japanese subtitles, there were no English subtitles for those speaking Japanese. Directing Grade: B-.

Given the sequence with Mia exploring Yokohama and an attempt to explain her presence in Japan, I'd say there's a fair deal of artistic merit here. Artistic Merit Grade: A-.

Overall Grade: B-.
