Spring Is Just Around The Corner
Posted:Mar 19, 2021 4:26 pm
Last Updated:Mar 21, 2022 9:18 pm

Actually, that's not quite true. The March Equinox also know as the Spring Equinox or the Vernal Equinox happens in my city ( Toronto, Ontario, Canada) tomorrow at 5:37 am EDT.

The March Equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator (the imaginary line in the above the Earth’s equator) from south t.o north and vice versa in September.

On the equinoxes, the Sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal, but not quite.

While it will be the vernal (spring) equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (USA, Central America, Canada, Europe, Asia, northern Africa), in the Southern Hemisphere, it's the autumnal (fall) equinox.

Spring is thought of as a time of re-birth and renewal. It is the time when the Light has won out over the Darkness and begins t.o grow in strength and power. It is a time when the World begins t.o wake up after the long, cold nights of winter.

The date of the March equinox plays a huge role in calculating the dates for when t.o celebrate Jewish Passover and Christian Easter.

The Iranian New Year (Nowruz, No-Ruz, No-Rooz, or No Ruz) occurs on the March equinox, in accordance with the Persian calendar.

Higan (Higan-e or Ohigan), is a week of Buddhist services in Japan during the March equinox and the September equinox. “Higan” means the “other shore” and refers t.o dead spirits who reach Nirvana after crossing the river of existence.

Spring weather can tease us with double-digit temperatures and then drop to below zero overnight. However, the Canadian Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting a mild and wet one for most parts of the country. Showers and thunderstorms will be prevalent especially over the Prairies and east during late April.

Time invest in a good pair of rainboots!

Many jobs have inherent risks, while with others, the risks are not so obvious. It’s only when you see the injury and death statistics that you appreciate the dangers the workers face every day. Here are some jobs that fall into that category:

Aircraft Pilot and Flight Engineers

In, crew fatalities accounted for sixty- percent of total aircraft fatalities, with the other thirty-eight percent being passengers, according t.o the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. That year, there were Hundred and fifty-one aviation accidents reported, hundred and twenty-seven were Canadian-registered aircraft.

coal Miners

For workers in this industry around the world, the dangers are widespread. China has the world’s largest mining industry and also one of the deadliest. A report found that the country accounts for eighty percent of coal-mining deaths around the world each year, mostly a result of explosions.

Deep-sea Fishermen

There’s a reason Deadliest Catch is such a popular show. In a data project with Statistics Canada, fishing was found t.o be the deadliest job in Canada. The highest cause of death in this industry is drowning. In a report released by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, falling overboard was found t.o be the second highest cause of death.

According t.o a study by Statistics Canada, farmers had the tenth highest traumatic injury fatality rate in Canada between and

An investigation by the Globe in collaboration with Statistics Canada, found that forestry had the tenth highest number of traumatic injury fatalities, with fifty-seven deaths between and It also found that it was the second deadliest industry in Canada.

A investigation found that roofers in Canada are five times more likely t.o die on the job than police officers!

Trash and Recycling Collectors

Trash and recycling collectors have the fifth most dangerous job in the United States. According t.o the latest data from the Bureau Labour Statistics, thirty-one deaths were recorded in many from workers falling off trucks, getting hit by vehicles while on the job, or accidents with machinery.

Truck Drivers

Truck drivers had the highest number of fatalities on the job in than any other occupation in the United States, with a death rate of twenty-four point seven per one hundred thousand workers. The report also found that out of all work injuries across all industries, transportation incidents remained the highest cause of death.

Ever had a dangerous job? What made it dangerous?

Beyond The Luck of The Irish

this day which is associated with the 'Luck of the Irish', leprechauns, pots of gold and shamrocks, I thought it would be fun t.o look at other signs and symbols of luck. I am sure my Irish ancestors will not be offended.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui is a complex system how t.o direct the flow of energy in your home so that it moves freely and organically. One of the basic principles is the representation of the five Chinese elements in the home: wood, water, metal, earth and fire.

Elephant Symbols

Both Buddhist and Hindu belief systems revere the elephant as godly. The elephant represents many things, from maternity and fertility t.o luck and wisdom. An elephant symbol with its trunk in an upright position is thought t.o bring good luck.

Many people burn incense t.o achieve a sense of relaxation, but some believe it can rid the home of negative energy. Incense is supposed t.o cleanse all types of negativity. My favourite is sandalwood.

Horseshoe-shaped morsels are in your morning bowl of Lucky Charms cereal, but why are they considered lucky? Historians trace the tradition back t.o Irish legends and tales. Placing an iron horseshoe above one’s front door is a classic way t.o protect the home.

Turtle Symbols

Just as the Irish believe placing a horseshoe above the front door will provide protection, feng shui followers believe that the turtle (or tortoise) can guard the home and is one of feng shui’s four celestial guardians. Whether the turtle shell is real or just a piece of art, it is supposed t.o be a great protective and supportive charm over the front and back doors.

Chinese superstition declares a bamboo plant t.o be an integral part of the home. The number of stalks the plant has gives it different meanings. Never give someone a plant with four stalks, for example, because the four in Chinese numerology is related t.o death and misfortune.

The Colour Red

The colour red appears in several cultures in connection with good fortune. The Chinese bring in the New Year with traditional red outfits and red envelopes containing $ . In India, many brides wear the colour red on their wedding day as a symbol of purity and prosperity.

The Hamsa hand is a symbol important t.o Islamic and Jewish history, culture and religion. It is meant t.o be a kind of protective amulet, and many people wear the Hamsa today as jewelry. Some believe it is a way t.o protect against the Evil Eye.

Pig Symbols

Pigs are symbols of good fortune for a historical reason, not a religious one: In Europe in the Middle Ages, a person had t.o be wealthy t.o own and maintain many pigs.

Whether you keep some acorns in a bowl as decoration or place a couple on the windowsill in accordance with Nordic tradition is up t.o you. The reason acorns are considered symbols of protection and power is because cultures have revered the massive and enduring oak tree from which they fall.

Being the curious type, weird, whacky facts and trivia have always interested m.e . Perhaps you are the same and will enjoy these tidbits of information:

Flamingos Bend Their Legs At The Ankle, Not The Knee

Roller Coasters Were invented To Distract From Sin

In the "1880s", hosiery businessman LaMarcus Thompson hated that Americans were tempted by hedonistic places like saloons and brothels. So he set t.o straighten one of the most immoral places he could think of: Coney Island in New York There, he built America’s first roller coaster t.o give New Yorkers some good, clean fun.

Supermarket Apples Can Be A Year Old

Those fresh apples aren’t that fresh, per se. They’re usually picked between August and November, covered in wax, and sent into cold storage. After t.o months, they finally land in your grocery store shelves.

It’s Impossible To Hum While Holding Your Nose
You just tested it, didn’t you? Normally, when you hum, the air is able t.o escape through your nose t.o create the sound, and of course, it can’t do that when you’re holding it shut.

Octopuses Have Hearts

Squids do too. One pumps blood t.o their whole systems, and the others are dedicated just t.o the gills.

The Shortest War In History Lasted Thirty- Minutes
When the sultan of British-protected Zanzibar died and a new one took over without British approval in 1896, the Brits were not happy. They’re also known as a “conspiracy,” which also sounds creepy.

William McKinley Gave Away His Lucky Charm And Then Was Shot charm
President McKinley always wore a red carnation for good luck but sometimes gave it as a memento. When greeting the crowd in "1901", he handed the one from his lapel t.o a young female named Myrtle. Minutes later, he was fatally shot by a man in the crowd.

You know the kind of people I mean.

They exist in every walk of life.

They have an opinion about Everything

They think because of who they are, they can't possibly be wrong.

They will still argue even when provided with indisputable facts.

They will say controversial things just t.o get a reaction from others.

They are annoying, bombastic, creative, bug the heck out of you and yet are often unforgettable.

One of the most well-known uses of this phrase is the title of a memoir from former American professional basketball player Charles Barkley, published in 2002.

It's become a popularized catchphrase and put on everything from bars of soap to coffee mugs and sweatshirts. Often, the person's name or occupation is added below.

Daylight Saving Time Myths and Facts
Posted:Mar 13, 2021 11:26 am
Last Updated:Mar 12, 2022 9:40 am

If Daylight Saving Time is observed in your area, don’t forget t.o turn your clocks ahead at two a.m. tomorrow morning.

Here are some common myths about DST that you may not be aware of:

Myth: ’s Called “Daylight Savings Time”

The Real Story: In North America and Australia, the convention of setting our clocks ahead one hour in the spring and behind one hour in the fall is properly known as “Daylight Saving Time.” For whatever reason, people have developed a habit of referring t.o it conversationally as “Savings Time,” plural. Britons refer t.o DST as “Summer Time,” while in Italy, the practice is called “Ora Legale.”

Myth: Benjamin Franklin Invented Daylight Saving Time

The Real Story: Thanks t.o An Economical Project, a satirical essay Franklin wrote in “1784” urging that Parisians adopt an earlier sleeping schedule, Franklin is often credited with “inventing” daylight saving time. Actually, that honour belongs William Willett, a British builder. While on an early morning horseback ride in the outskirts of London in “1905”, Willett theorized that if the United Kingdom moved its clocks forward by 80 minutes between April and October, Britons would be able t.o enjoy more sunlight. Willett spent much of his own personal fortune trying to persuade the British Parliament t.o embrace the idea, but he died in “1915” without seeing his dream come t.o fruition.

Myth: Germans Were the First T.0 Embrace Daylight Saving Time

The Real Story: Germany adopted daylight saving time in “1916” t.o conserve energy during World War I. However, certain regions of Canada were already following DST as early as “1908”. On July 1 of that year, residents of Port Arthur in Ontario, which is now Thunder Bay, were the first in the world t.o turn their clocks forward by one hour.

Myth: Daylight Saving Time is Observed Everywhere

The Real Story: Countries along or below the equator, don’t implement time shifts since daylight hours rarely change from season t.o season. Much of Asia and Africa opt-out of DST as well, as does Iceland and parts of Australia. Even though Antarctica has no daylight in the winter and 24-hour daylight in the summer, research crews living in the area observe DST t.o communicate with their home bases.

Myth: Daylight Saving Time Makes Us Healthy

The Real Story: More sunlight may mean more vitamin D, but numerous studies have also linked daylight saving time t.o an increase in road accidents and health problems. A “2008” Swedish study in the New England Journal of Medicine which was based on information collected over a 20-year period, found a higher incidence of heart attacks in the first weekdays after clocks move forward and fall back. Changes in circadian rhythm too, can also trigger cluster headaches and lead t.o days or weeks of discomfort.

Myth: Daylight Saving Time Helps Farmers

The Real Story: When the United States passed the Uniform Time Act in “1966”, people thought the extra daylight would give farmers more time t.o harvest their produce in the morning. In reality, it has the opposite effect, and farmers tend t.o have been the loudest critics of DST over the past several decades.

Do you have trouble adjusting t.o the time change? Is a difference in how you react when losing an hour vs gaining an hour?

Have you ever heard this saying before?

I hadn't but when I saw i.t posted elsewhere today, i.t made m.e stop to reflect where I am and why I am here.

People bickering here about the proper use of blogs. Others complaining about being bombarded with unwelcomed 'dick pics'. Some trying t.o publicly shame those that wouldn't accept No for an answer. Some leave and then are drawn back here like some strange addiction. Others seem t.o thrive on drama.

Personally, I have discovered how much I enjoy the freedom t.o fill my 'space' the way that I am comfortable. I didn’t set out with a goal of achieving a certain number of ‘watchers’ nor do I post expecting a certain amount of comments. However, whenever someone takes time out of their day t.o stop at my space, i.t is appreciated and I acknowledge their presence. If friendships evolve, that is an added bonus.

In the past, I allowed myself t.o get drawn into the 'blog wars' and friendships were lost. The stress and unpleasantness of i.t. all made m.e realize i.t simply wasn't worth the trouble. I continue t.o see what goes on but choose not t.o comment.

So why do I stay on here? Because I can. I don't have t.o explain myself t.o anyone. I am m.e. and I don't try nor pretend t.o be anyone else. You would see the same person if we met. Some day I will leave and i.t will be on my own terms. In the meantime, I will see how things continue to unfold.

And I have sensed his touch, in the depths of my heart's delights.
I have heard him speak in tones that bring silence t.o my breath,
And I have smelled his musky scent lingering in the twilight's death.
I have seen him glow in the shadow of the sun,
And I have touched his rugged countenance wishing I was his chosen one.

International Womens Day Tribute

Last Updated:Mar 7, 2022 1:42 pm

Although this wasn't officially recognized until "1977" by the United Nations, the history of the celebration can be traced back t.o the early 20th century, thanks t.o labour movements across North America and Europe.

Commemoration of International Women's today ranges from being a public holiday in some countries t.o being largely ignored elsewhere. In some places, it is a day of protest; in others, it is a day that celebrates womanhood.

I want t.o take this opportunity t.o recognize some of the amazing women in my life. This is a brief synopsis, otherwise I could write a page about each one.

Emmeline Pankhurst
A political activist participated in the famous Black Friday; a suffragette demonstration in London, England on 'November 18, 19'. The women stormed the Houses of Parliament, trying t.o secure the right for women t.o vote. I have postcards she wrote 'to' other family members during her travels.

My Great Aunt
After her engagement in the "1940s", she postponed her wedding so she could after her mother had become bedridden. After ten yrs. , she pursued a successful business career. When her husband developed severe heart disease, she learned t.o drive when she turned sixty-five so that she wouldn't worry that he might suffer a fatal heart attack while driving. They never had but were generous t.o m.e with their time and knowledge.

My Mother
At the age of nineteen and the eldest of five , she lost her mother t.o cancer. Once her were in school full time, she changed careers and became a municipal employee as a dental assistant until her retirement at age sixty-five.

My Aunt
She was nine yrs. and the youngest of the five siblings when their mother died. She later lost her youngest t.o a brain tumour, her husband t.o lung cancer and now in her eighties is dealing with breast cancer. Her calm demeanour is one that I have always admired.

My Sisten-in-Law
Within a span of fewer than twenty-four months, she lost her brother, her aunt, her father and then her mother. She had a successful corporate career, moving through the executive ranks, creating several unique positions while also raising her . She retired before the age of fifty-five and is actively involved in her community and assorted women's events.

My Best Friend Susan
We met through work over twenty-five yrs. ago. Five yrs. after her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was also diagnosed. Five yrs. later she developed bone cancer. She has participated in several clinical trials. She never complains and continues living with grace and dignity. I am honoured she is my friend.

"Always be the first- version of yourself, instead of a second- version of somebody else." - Judy Garland.

Be kind t.o all the women in your life, today and every day.

Sometimes, people mistake my easy-going nature and overall quiet demeanour for naiveté. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Life's hard knocks have taught m.e. t.o trust my instincts and I know the truth will be revealed. My b.s. radar has been fine-tuned in day-to-day life as well as online.

To quote the famous Shania Twain song:
Oh you think you are special
Oh you think you are something else
That don't impress me much.

Keep that in mind, the next time you spout your b.s. or spin a tale full of untruths.
