CANADA DAY

Today is Canada Day. It is a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867 , enactment of the British North America Act, which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire.

This year's celebrations are sombre, with the recent discovery of the remains of hundreds of Indigenous at former residential schools. Many cities and towns have scaled back or cancelled Canada Day celebrations outright to make space for those grieving the lost and forgotten.

Canadian Heritage is still holding its virtual Canada Day events, including an online concert featuring French, English and Indigenous musicians. However, as those events kick off, the flag on the Peace Tower in Ottawa will sit at half-mast.

As our Prime Minister stated, " We must reflect on our country’s historical failures and the injustices that still exist for Indigenous peoples and many others in Canada."

I will never deny that this is my home. I will be honest about our past and do my best and what is necessary to help build a better Canada.

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North, strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Happy Canada Day!
All countries have difficult pasts to figure out. Here in he UK, slavery has become a big issue with statues of men who plied or profited from the slave trade being pulled down, removed etc.

As our Prime Minister stated, " We must reflect on our country’s historical failures and the injustices that still exist for Indigenous peoples and many others in Canada."
it is a hollow gesture to have a silver tongue
it is a brave thing to correct the mistakes of the past
give those that we have wronged, the closure they seek
give them the names of the children we have stolen and hidden
give them closer
give them peace
show backbone show dignity show compassion
this is the canada i want to be proud to say
i am canadian... and i'll take a double, double (what that is american now?)

there is a world of difference between insane and stupid

happy Canada Day my friend!

I have visited Calgary and Vancouver on a road trip eight years ago.
I loved both cities! I hope to go back again someday.

It has been a sad times things will get better. Enjoy the freedom that you have and be thankful that politicians aren't trying to take away some of your rights.

Yes, agree. How to deal with those pasts can be confusing, challenging and heartbreaking. But, we can't deny facts. Here, statues have been defaced, destroyed, consideration being given to renaming streets, etc. It will take years to correct. Thank you for stopping by. Perhaps, you will again

Love your post. Wish everyone would adopt the principles in the last two paragraphs, especially the United States.
